Kissy, Kissy

Mags is learning to ‘give loves’ and it is a slobbery mess, but I’ll take ’em. Sometimes her kisses turn into bites and so we’re working to distinguish between the two. Seeing as the poor child has been kissed nearly every minute of her life, you’d think she’s be able to plant a good one here or there.

In other news, we (and I mean Barry) is thisclose to finishing some of our FALL gardening/weeding. I’m not sure I really remember what our garden looks like, it has been so long since I spent a significant amount of time with it. There was a point when Maggie was a few months old and my parents were visiting and I got to go outside and do some major cutting back. It felt so good!

At one point my dad was inside with tiny Maggie walking around the house with her as the rest of us were outside….it started to rain and I kept on cutting back the bushes in front of our house until they really couldn’t be cut back anymore. It was so satisfying to be outside and ripping and tearing, but equally satisfying in a very different way, to come back inside and hold my new baby.

As Maggie learns to give kisses and mixes in a few bites, I think about that day all those months ago where I spent part of my day ferociously cutting down part of our cherry (?) tree and ripping out weeds, only to be called inside to peel off my dirty clothes and tend to my hungry baby. Some moments feel like bites and other like big, sloppy kisses. I’ll take both, thankyouverymuch.

Does This Make Me Crafty?

Never have I thought of myself as crafty, but yesterday it occurred to me that perhaps I’ve got a little craft in me! I lined the back of a shelf in Maggie’s room with wrapping paper and Mod Podge. I didn’t document it from start to finish because I wasn’t going to share with all 9 of our blog readers, but I’m pleased with the end result. Lucky you, right?

Barry ended up taking a few pictures ~ we’re working with him to learn how to focus manually….be patient with the man! We got the shelf free last year from my aunt (thanks, Sue!) and it has floated around between our guest room and Maggie’s room. I’m not a huge fan of things that are just plain, old white. If I had my way, everything would be beautiful, solid wood or enhanced with color.

Every time I’ve looked at this shelf it has bothered me, but I’ve never pulled the trigger on sprucing it up. The shelf is inside Maggie’s closet and NOBODY looks twice at it, but when I’m feeding Maggie and the closet is left open, which happens often, I’m stuck looking at this shelf. So, after pulling the backs off, mod podging (is that a word?) the wrapping paper on, and putting the backs on, I had myself something that I actually like to look at.

Just today as I sat down to nurse, I looked over at the left-open closet and new-fangled shelf and found myself pleased. Granted, it’s just a little bit of color, and it’s just wrapping paper….but, dang, it’s the little things that make me happy these days.

A Party and a New Friend

Our weekend started off pretty relaxed and low key. We’ve been shifting things around and it seems like each room hasn’t quite recovered. The day after Christmas we got rid of our TV. Not on purpose, but just more because we never really used it and it took up a ton of space. I only kind of miss Oprah. Friday we spent time reading and sipping on hot beverages – it’s the new us apparently.

Saturday brought my parents and Sparky to visit. They got to see Maggie play in the Radio Flyer up and down the hall and I’m pretty sure my dad wished that he had ear plugs because Maggie would not tone down her squeals of glee.

Sunday we braved the roads and headed to A-Town to celebrate Midge’s Birthday – Happy Birthday, Grandma! – and my aunt Nancy had brought some old home videos of all the cousins. It was hilarious to watch and also really sweet at the same time. The highlight, by far, was a snippet of my older brother bustin’ a move. I laughed so hard I was crying. I think as a teacher I would have really enjoyed him…

On our way back home we stopped to meet Jeff and Jill’s new baby, Jenna. She is SO, SO sweet and perfect. Maggie was really tired by this time and quietly played with some of Jeff’s old toys. At one point Jeff put Jenna down next to Maggie for a photo, and Maggie bopped her on the head. Luckily, Jenna slept through the whole thing.

Once we got home it was bath time and snooze time. Well, we wanted it to be snooze time, but Maggie had a different idea. She threw a party for a while and we sipped on tea and talked about our weekend and potential snow.
