Good Wife, Bad Wife, Happy Wife

BEFORE THE SWIM

Sometimes I feel like a bad wife. For example, last week when I responded to Barry’s comment about a rough day at work by telling him that Mondays are often difficult and was met with silence, I wondered what I’d said wrong.  He paused and gently said that he thought it was Wednesday, which indeed it was.  Good wives probably keep track of the days of the week and don’t blame a long day at the office on Monday of all days.

This past weekend I strapped myself into my newly acquired triathlon wet suit and accompanied Barry on his training swim around Cain Lake. Let me be clear about a few things:

1. I have almost no intention of doing a full triathlon.

2. Although I was in the water for just as long as Barry, he literally swam circles around me.

3. There was a time not too long ago that I could swim almost as fast as Barry. Not so much anymore.

I went with Barry at first because I knew he was more excited for me to try out my wetsuit than I was, but by the time we finished up our swim I was delighted that I’d decided to go. We made it out to the middle part of the lake and it was at that point that I realized that perhaps I’d pushed myself a bit too hard. I opted to do a bit of back stroke and Barry proceeded to swim like a seal. Go figure.

As I found myself floating there, with  my tummy pointed to the sky, I pushed thoughts of fish nibbling my toes out my head and took in the scene around me: trees lining the skyline, cozy homes nesteled into the woods and my amazing husband swimming effortlessly through the water just ahead of me. We left Maggie with Greg and Linda and it was nice to have some time doing something active with Barry without the extra strain of pushing a stroller or hauling a child in a pack.

By the time we got out of the water and headed back to Greg and Linda’s, I thought to myself that perhaps I’d earned some points in the Good Wife Department because I knew the day of the week and I had finally tried out my wet suit. As turns out, I definitely earned some points, but it didn’t have anything to do with days of the week or wetsuits…it was more about the shared experience of floating in the middle of the lake together and truly enjoying it.

Truthfully, there isn’t really such thing as points when it comes to being married, but it is certainly fun to joke about.  I’m just grateful that I’m married to somebody that I appreciate so much and I know it goes both ways.

Good Wife, Bad Wife, Happy Wife.

AFTER THE SWIM

Give Me Just A Little More of This Weekend Thing

Swimming lessons ended last week, with sprinkles of rain tickling our noses and Maggie high-fiving all the lifeguards and tweens that she’d become friends with. On one hand, I’m sad that this session is over, but the coldish pool wasn’t getting any warmer with each passing day. We’ll try another session in August if the weather ever heats up. Weekends zip by around here, never ever giving me enough time before Monday swallows us up again with a snap.

We were fooled on Friday into thinking that it was going to be a cold, rainy day and when we showed up at Thomas’ house to visit, we realized that we were WAY overdressed. I peeled off my wool socks and vest, but Maggie eventually shed all her clothes to wade in the pool we’d filled with freezing water. Most of all, I think she liked wandering around the yard and throwing things in to the pool. I kept thinking about last summer when we busted out the same exact pool for Thomas and Mags to try out, we used it for exactly 30 seconds before Thomas started crying and Maggie almost got sun burned. Oh, how far the two little tykes have come.

One year later we’re spending most of our time making sure that they’re not hurting themselves, others, or breaking any important objects.  Friday was a great day to be together and spend time at Marc and Lara’s. Their house is beautiful and we set up camp in their yard exactly in the right spot to guard the stairs, eat strawberries, dip our toes in the pool, have access to the hose and watch the nudie parade of Maggie and Thom.

I need to point out the above photo that I took a few days before we left on our NoDak trip. See what I mean about Maggie and Thomas possibly hurting others, themselves or other important objects? If you can’t see it I can help you:

1. Maggie is about to “pet” the sleeping kitty.

2. Thomas is ‘gently touching”  the pretty vase with a piece of kindling.

Not to sound pessimistic or anything, but I’m pretty sure both of those things could turn into a scratched face or a broken face/bopped head/cut hand….

Barry has been working like crazy for the past few weeks and this weekend I think it finally hit him how busy he’s been because he asked me a number of times about when Maggie started to do certain things (new signs, ways of eating/drinking, words etc.). I so appreciate all his hard work, but I’ve really missed our relaxed routine that has been replaced by longish hours and stress.  I know we’ll fall back into that schedule when he’s done with his current project at work and training for his race.

This weekend was nice and calm because we literally had nothing on our calendar, unlike the coming five weeks. We were both able to get workouts in, take a few walks with Syd, make Strawberry bread, go to Chach’s party, enjoy the Farmer’s Market, read, watch the rain, and read a ton of books with Mags in her new fort.

Weekends are never long enough around here.

Good Golly it is sunny!!! We’re packing our suits and heading to Thomas’ pool to go swimming for the morning!! Rumor has it he has a new bubble machine to show Maggie….wahoo!!

Last night we went for a family run at a nearby track. I have to admit, I am so thankful that Barry encourages me in my slow and steady pace. I worked on timing my mile and some sprints while Barry zipped around the track pushing Maggie. Even with a stroller he is much, much faster than me.

After we finished running we went to my grandparent’s house and took advantage of their hot tub. Their backyard is so beautiful and relaxing and it was a great way to end our day. While we enjoyed the tub, Maggie entertained Sue and my grandparents. We brought her glow worm and Maggie insisted on getting all of us to stop our feet along with the music, thankfully my grandparents and Sue are willing participants.

Maggie is still snoring in bed next to Barry and Sydney right now. So, although the sun is shining, we’re not quite ready to hit the road. For the record, I’m excited for today and I hope you are too because my FREAKING DOWN VEST is in the closet and I’m slathering on some sunscreen!!!

To summer!!!!!
