Heart Shaped Cakes

Lately when people have asked us what we’re doing for Valentine’s Day, I have found myself responding that we don’t really celebrate the day…which isn’t entirely true. We almost always do something special to mark the occasion, but our gestures aren’t too much out of context from our day-to-day lives. Barry brought me a boquet of flowers  a week or so ago and we’ve been calling them the NON Valentine Flowers, although they look pretty much like V-Day flowers.

We’re pretty good about being mushy-gushy all year long, and I think that we’re kind of snobs about not going out to eat (or do anything else really) with all the crowds on this particular night….so we typically stay in. But this morning Maggie and I woke up to Frank Sinatra blasting from the kitchen and the smell of Barry’s pancakes filling up our house. As we wandered into the kitchen, Barry was in full-fleged breakfast mode with the table set and heart shaped pancakes (that he cut out using a cookie cutter) ready to eat.

We even had sparkling cider and the NON Valentine flowers had been moved to the center of our table, but the best part about it was the handmade card propped up against the vase. Last week while we were in Anacortes Barry raided my fancy paper stash and made the sweetest card.

It was held together by painters tape and had pieces of the red striped paper I was looking for yesterday when Maggie and I were doing some art projects. I swore up and down that I had the paper and looked everywhere for it, never once thinking that Barry had used it to make ME a card. Had Barry been home, I’m sure that he would had gotten a kick out of me scratching my head in search for the paper that he used!

We’ll have a little bit  more of a fancy dinner tonight and probably be more intentional with our conversation, but really I feel like we’re good at doing special things all year round.

We do celebrate Valentine’s Day and the way we do it is just perfect for US.  I love my mushy-gushy homemade card (held together with painter’s tape) and those heart shaped pancakes sure were delicious.

Hope your Valentine’s Day is as simple as can be.

On a side note, in looking through my photo archives, I discovered that there really aren’t a lot of pictures of just Barry and me. New goal: take more pictures with my cute husband.
